FDA confirms elevated levels of 'toxic substances' in teething products

After investigating reports that more than 400 babies were sickened and 10 died in connection with homeopathic teething products, the Food and Drug Administration confirmed Friday that it had indeed found elevated levels of the toxic substance, belladonna, in the products. Thus far, the company has not agreed to do so.

FDA advises parents to no longer use teething rings or other products of this kind. The safety alert was issued back in 2010, but the agency has received more than 400 reports of adverse effects since then and made a decision to act more decisively.

Earlier in September 2016, the FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, had warned against the use of these tablets after it received dozens of reports about adverse events, including seizures and some infant deaths.

"Homeopathic teething products have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.", the agency wrote.

What do you think about the FDA's warning regarding the homeopathic products?

"The body's response to belladonna in children under two years of age is unpredictable and puts them at unnecessary risk", said Doctor Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. The agency said some tests showed the tablets contained higher levels of belladonna than what was claimed on the label.

"The implication in the FDA release is that consumers who still have the product shouldn't use it because it might be unsafe", she said. They didn't want to put the parents in a place between them saying the product was safe and the FDA warning.

In November, Raritan Pharmaceutical recalled three homeopathic products for containing belladonna. Consumers should seek medical treatment if their child experiences seizures, breathing difficulties, lethargy, sleepiness, muscle weakness, constipation, skin flushing, difficulty urinating and agitation after using these products, the FDA said.

According to Fox6 Now, Mary C. Borneman, a spokeswoman for Hyland's said that they discontinued the product due to their commitment to parents who trusted them.
