Trump Reaffirms US Commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in Conversation With Hollande

Hollande Urges Trump to Respect Iran Nuclear Deal

"The chancellor regrets the USA government's entry ban against refugees and the citizens of certain countries", Ms Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement.

Mr Trump has signed an executive order to ban immigration from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen for 120 days and the German Chancellor said she "regrets" the move.

In their phone call, the first since Trump's inauguration, the two leaders recognized that the alliance must be capable of facing new threats, according to a White House statement, and that all members must contribute their "fair share".

Trump has also said Merkel made a "catastrophic mistake" by allowing more than a million refugees, mostly Muslims fleeing war in the Middle East, to come to Germany.

British foreign minister Boris Johnson, who on Sunday said it was "divisive and wrong to stigmatise [people] because of [their] nationality", was also seeking clarification from USA officials what the executive order meant for United Kingdom citizens.

Leaders of Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Malta, as well as the host Portugal also participated in the meeting and discussed growing challenges, from the refugee crisis to the low economic growth, at a time when growing populism has intensified political uncertainty in Europe.

The French president, Fran├žois Hollande, said on Saturday that "when [Trump] rejects the arrival of refugees, while Europe has done its duty, we should respond to him".

French President Francois Hollande has urged European leaders to form a united front against US President Donald Trump's stance and remarks that are allegedly aimed at destroying the integrity of the European Union by advocating other nations to follow Brexit.

Hollande said: "We must conduct firm dialogue with the new American administration which has shown it has its own approach to the problems we all face".

The ban, on refugees and citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, saw European capitals scramble to determine how it would effect their dual nationality citizens.

Merkel is not the only global leader to express concern over the immigration ban.

The language on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation came after Trump called the alliance "obsolete", but it highlighted the need for reforms and updates.

And, in a further sign of the strong ties between the U.S. and the UK, Mrs May revealed during the press conference at the White House that the Queen had invited President Trump and the First Lady to visit her later this year.

"I'm arguing for realpolitik not sabre-rattling", Seehofer said.
