Trump taps vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy to chair vaccine safety panel

Jan. 10 2017 Robert F. Kennedy Jr. talks with reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower in New York after meeting with President-elect Donald Trump

After a flurry of news reports about Kennedy's remarks Tuesday, the Trump team was walking back the message.

Already, there is a National Vaccine Advisory Committee that advises the government on vaccine safety and other issues, in addition to regulation and oversight by scientists at the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kennedy, an outspoken critic of vaccines, said he would lead a new commission on vaccine safety and scientific integrity. He has questions about it.

"I am totally in favour of vaccines", Mr Trump said during a primary season debate in 2015. But a Trump spokeswoman later said the president-elect is only exploring the possibility of forming a "commission on autism".

"We are deeply concerned that creating a new commission on vaccine safety would cause unnecessary confusion and adversely impact parental decision-making and immunization practices", said Patrice A. Harris, M.D., chair, AMA Board of Trustees.

Mr Kennedy accepted the request at Trump Tower where they talked about vaccines and immunisations, according to the President-elect's press secretary Sean Spicer. And almost all vaccines for children, save the flu vaccine, no longer use the preservative and have not done so since 2001, reports the Atlantic. But, according to CNN, neither Trump nor Kenedy is articulate pro-vaccine, though. Numerous studies have debunked any connection between either vaccination or any specific components of vaccines and diagnoses of autism. "I have seen several patients who suffered severe brain damage from measles before the vaccine was available", he says. All states should, at least, require schools to publish the percentage of their students who have been vaccinated, so that parents can be assured that the schools are safe. In his column, Neides condemned flu shots and other vaccines because of the "toxins" they contain and questioned their link to autism-a link that has always been debunked among physicians.

Over the summer, Trump reportedly met with discredited vaccine skeptic Andrew Wakefield, the prominent senior author of a now-retracted 1998 Lancet study that drew links between the MMR vaccine and autism. Had they done so, they would have been shown an overwhelming volume of clear literature showing that vaccines are safe, do not cause autism, and are a necessary part of modern society's efforts to prevent a plague-era massive population die off. The JAMA review noted, "Declines were 80% or greater for cases and deaths of most vaccine-preventable diseases targeted since 1980 including hepatitis A, acute hepatitis B, Hib, and varicella".
