8 new flu deaths reported as season peaks

Bottom line: get that shot if you haven't already because avoiding that trip to the doctor is nothing to sneeze at.

Flu season is in full swing, and the vaccine looks like it's protecting only about half of us from infection this year. Available vaccines are formulated differently each year-based on the strains of flu that are expected to circulate. "Being vaccinated is your best option to protect yourself and your family from influenza".

Idaho has verified 36 flu deaths so far this year.

The Idaho Bureau of Laboratories reports that four different influenza viruses are circulating in Idaho this season; 98.4% are the influenza A (H3) virus, which is considered the most severe of the influenza viruses detected. That's not bad since the bug that's making most people sick is one of the worst.

The Department of Health Services reported Friday that there were 752 confirmed cases reported across the state last week, marking a significant increase from the 346 cases documented the previous week.

Hospitalizations for flu are also increasing steadily, with the overall rate now at 29.4 per 100,000 population, the CDC said. Older people, children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions (asthma, diabetes, and heart disease) are at particularly high risk for serious flu complications.
