Alpine Police Find Remains Near Location College Student Went Missing

Zuzu Verk

Alpine police Lt. Felipe Fierro says Robert Fabian was arrested Saturday on a charge of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence by concealing a human corpse.

On Friday, police found human remains in a shallow grave off Wagon Road in Sunny Glen, northwest of Alpine. The remains will be sent off for identification.

Fabian was the person who first reported Verk missing after he had claimed that he had not seen her for two days.

Multiple investigative agencies remain on scene including: the Brewster County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Department of Safety, Texas Rangers, U.S. Homeland Security and the U.S. Border Patrol.

Fierro says the arrest is related to last fall's disappearance of Sul Ross State University junior ZuZu Verk of Fort Worth.

Hundreds turned out for massive searches in and around Alpine in an effort to find Verk.

Verk was featured in Dateline's Missing in America series shortly after she vanished.

Fabian previously told investigators Verk left his home around 3 a.m. October 12 - neighbors told police they heard the couple arguing, something Fabian denied shortly after, the Washington Post reported.

However, this morning, the warrant for Fabian's arrest was executed.

A $200,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the whereabouts or safe return of Verk.

An arrest affidavit for Robert Fabian is expected to be released on Monday.
