Australia plane crash kills five

Victoria Police assistant commissioner Stephen Leane said it appeared the pilot had tried to return to the runaway shortly after taking off.

Mr Andrews said it was "perfectly natural" for people to have concerns in the wake of the crash, but "rational and logical decisions" needed to be made once investigations had been carried out.

Police believe the plane was bound for Tasmania's King Island, which is known for its golf courses.

Meanwhile, the ATSB has also deployed a team of four investigators to the Melbourne site to examine the wreckage, interview witnesses and gather audio and radar data from yesterday's crash which marks the worst aviation accident Australia has seen in 30 years.

A DFO shopworker identified as Ash told a United Kingdom based news channel that he saw "the fireball go up into the air".

'We were just coming off the off-ramp, we felt just everything shake and a massive explosion and a fireball go up, ' he told AAP.

Small plane crashes on street in Bayonne, N.J.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it would investigate how the twin-engine Beechcraft B200 King Air crashed soon after 09:00 local time on Tuesday (22:00 GMT Monday).

Essendon airport will be closed until further notice.

The crash occurred at the DFO shopping centre which caught fire.

Three schools were closed in the area, but have now reopened.

The Australian pilot, who was also killed in the crash, was identified by Australian media as Max Quartermain.

The light aircraft then nosedived into the DTFO shopping centre, killing the pilot and four passengers.

"There are some people who have wanted Essendon Airport to close for a very long time, and I don't think that's going to happen", Mr Andrews told RN Breakfast.

"A number of people have died, we are now reaching out to their families to provide them with the support that they need to try to comfort them at what must be such a awful event", assistant commissioner Leane said this morning.

Nearby resident Usha said she ran outside after hearing a loud bang and saw smoke billowing from the shopping centre.

The plane crashed into the side of the DFO shopping centre, causing fire to break out with images from the scene showing black smoke billowing into the air.
