'Blind Sheikh' Trade Center bomber Omar Abdel-Rahman dies in prison

Omar Abdel-Rahman, the so-called Blind Sheik convicted of plotting terror attacks in the United States in the 1990s, died Saturday in a federal prison where he was serving a life sentence.

Abdel-Rahman's son Ammar told Reuters that a us representative had called his family to notify them of Abdel-Rahman's death.

Abdel-Rahman would later travel to the United States to preach his hatred at mosques in the NY area. Preaching in NY and New Jersey, he spread his radical vision of Islam, decried US support for Israel, and built a network of devoted followers.

But Abdel Rahman remained a symbol of resistance among some factions linked to terrorist activities. The assassin has said that Abdel-Rahman urged him to kill Kahane.

His target, The World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, was a bustling epicenter of commerce.

Six people died in the attack and more than 1,000 people were injured in the attack on February 26, 1993.

Abdel-Rahman and his followers were planning to "levy a war of urban terrorism against the United States" in an attempt to change U.S. foreign policy, an indictment said at the time of his trial, Reuters reported.

Born in the Egyptian Nile Delta village of al-Gamalia in 1938, Abdel-Rahman was blind by the age of 10 months.

Reuters reports that he was accused of issuing a fatwa that led to the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat in 1986.

USA authorities blamed a computer error for the visa, but the mistake was compounded in 1991 when Abdel-Rahman was given a green card and permanent US resident status.

Abdel-Rahman entered the United States in July 1990 and after the State Department revoked his tourist visa in November, he still managed to obtain a green card from the Immigration and Naturalization Services office in Newark, New Jersey, in April 1991.

Rahman and nine of his followers were arrested in June 1993.

During a sentencing hearing, he gave a 90 minute speech in which he claimed he had not "committed any crime except telling people about Islam".
