Blizzard forecast predicts 12 to 16 inches of snow

According to The Weather Channel, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston are expected to be inundated by the storm, and could thus be subject to "significant flight delays".

Winter storm warnings are in effect for 18 of New Jersey's 21 counties now through 4 p.m. Thursday, while winter weather advisories are active for Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties from 8 a.m.to 2 p.m. Thursday.

The winter storm has prompted officials to cancel more than 3,600 flights.

How much snow did other areas get?

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said Thursday that public schools will be closed for a second consecutive day Friday.

White flakes already are falling in parts of New Jersey.

Right from NY and OH to Delaware, Maine, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and West Virginia; all these states are in the path of the storm.

The storm comes as a surprise to residents in the Northeast, who have been experiencing warmer weather than usual, with Philadelphia and NY seeing temperatures of 60 degrees on Wednesday. Even in the Boston area, where the storm is starting later, snowfall is likely to come to an end before midnight tonight. Subway service in NY is still as functional as it ever is, though the Long Island and Metro-North Railroads experiencing delays. Still, the city lifted its snow emergency at noon. My latest forecast shows Monmouth County picking up 4 to 7 inches, Ocean County seeing about 2 to 5 inches, and the I-295 corridor shoveling about 3 to 6 inches.

A half foot of snow or more could fall in a matter of hours Thursday morning as an intense storm quickly moves through the Philadelphia region as temps drop to freezing and below.

Numerous city's bustling streets and roads are empty with many people choosing to stay indoors away from the freezing temperatures.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter declared a Winter Storm Emergency just before 6 a.m. Thursday, urging residents to use caution when driving on slick roads.

The snow is expected taper off by the early afternoon in the Philadelphia and New York City areas, but New Englanders should brace for snowfall through the evening commute.

Schools in Philadelphia, Boston and CT, among other areas, will also be closed Thursday morning.
