Boris Johnson attacks Blair's 'bare-faced effrontery' for opposing Brexit

Tony Blair

In a speech in London, Mr Blair questioned whether the referendum had given a mandate for "Brexit at any cost".

"Indeed, even the term "hard Brexit" requires amendment", Blair will say in his speech. "As these terms become clear, it is their right to change their mind", he said.

Calls from the former prime minister for pro-Europeans to form a new cross-party movement to persuade leave-voters they got it wrong prompted a backlash, with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson calling him "condescending". What was unfortunately only dim in our sight before the referendum is now in plain sight.

He denounced hardline Leave campaigners as "ideologues" pursuing "Brexit at any cost", which would leave millions worse off.

The British people are being advised to switch off their television sets whenever former Prime Minister Tony Blair appears.

Britons voted to leave the European Union "without knowledge of the true terms of Brexit", Blair is expected to say in the speech organised by Open Britain, a pro-EU campaign group born out of the Remain campaign.

Senior Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith called Blair "arrogant" and his intervention "nonsense", while Downing Street insisted the government was absolutely committed to deliver Brexit as decided in the June 23, 2016 referendum.

The former Tory leader and arch-Brexiteer added: "He seems to have forgotten what democracy is about".

European Union leaders including French President Francois Hollande insist Britain shouldn't be able to pick and choose among membership benefits, keeping those it likes, when it leaves the bloc. He accused the government of prioritising immigration control to the exclusion of nearly everything else, particularly the economy. Over half said Brexit was already having an adverse effect on their business. It is the waking thought, the daily grind, the meditation before sleep and the stuff of its dreams; or nightmares.

While the SNP said his comments reflect Brexit creating a different reality form 2014 referendum.

With less than 48 hours until the polls open for Ecuador's General Election, we'll be taking a look ahead to the most likely outcomes, as well as what they'll mean for Ecuador, and the region...

"The Scottish Government has offered an in-depth and comprehensive plan showing how Scotland can remain in the single market even if the rest of the United Kingdom leaves, but it is clear that compromise is simply not being listened to by the Tories, despite clear evidence today that Brussels is very open to such a deal".
