Congress Is Concerned With Russia's Military Provocations

"A Russian spy ship patrolling 30 miles from the Groton SUBASE underscores that the threats posed by a resurgent Russia are real", said Connecticut Congressman Joe Courtney, a ranking member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, in a statement Wednesday. A cruise missile test that may violate arms treaties.

Within the past week, Russian Federation has repeatedly buzzed US destroyers in the Black Sea and dismissed the recent actions by the White House in regards to the resignation of Mike Flynn.

Russia's vessel is also bristling with surface-to-air missiles and guns. It did not disclose the location, other than to say the ship was off the East Coast. The position is dangerously near, 30 miles, the US Navy Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.

A Russian spy ship sits 30 miles off the coast of CT, a U.S. defense official told CNN, while an armed Russian warplane recently carried out a "mock attack" against a USA ship. The USS Porter, a guided missile destroyer, was conducting normal operations about 50 miles from the coast of Romania when it was "buzzed" by Russian jets, including fighters and a transport vehicle.

A Russian spy ship Viktor Leonov SSV-175, is seen docked at the port in Havana, Jan. 20, 2015.

"While Russia continues to flex its muscle by deploying a cruise missile that violates a long-standing arms treaty, buzzing USA naval ships in worldwide waters, and floating an intelligence ship along our coast, President Trump has failed to show leadership and condemn Vladimir Putin and his Russian regime", she said in a statement.

In September 2015, another Russian intelligence-gathering ship was seen operating outside the submarine base in Kings Bay.

"We're aware of it", he said.

"While the United States and the alliance seek to engage with Russian Federation, we must at the same time defend ourselves if Russian Federation chooses to act contrary to worldwide law", Mr. Mattis said in Brussels. That vessel, the Yanter, also approached the Florida coast, where it performed standard research mapping out the U.S.'s communication cables. The US carries out similar data-gathering and surveillance missions near Russian Federation frequently.

The ship did not enter USA waters.

The ship is being tracked by the U.S. Coast Guard. However, the representative added it was troubling in light of President Donald Trump's alleged ties with Russian Federation.
