Deadly Somalia blast hits Mogadishu marketplace

In a horrific incident in Somalia, at least 39 people killed and over 50 were injured on Sunday, when a auto bomb exploded at a busy market place in the western part of the capital Mogadishu.

It was the deadliest attack to occur since Mohamed took office after winning a landmark presidential election earlier in February. "There were also members of the security forces and shoppers and the blast was so huge that it killed almost 20 people, a lot of them civilians", said witness Sumayo Moalim.

"We are conducted a security operation after the attack and we have captured four suspected al-Shabaab members" he said.

"There were many small scale traders alongside the road and teashops and restaurants".

Farmajo who is in office since last week, said he will pay all the hospital bills charged on patients injured in Sunday's marketplace bombing, and airlift the critically wounded for special treatment overseas.

A senior Shabaab official, Sheikh Hassan Yaqub Ali, said in a speech broadcast on a radio station linked to the group, that Farmajo was considered more risky than past presidents as he held joint American citizenship.

The Somali government has announced that it will suspend flights to Mogadishu next Wednesday when the new president will be officially inaugurated. I saw more than 20 people lying on the ground.

Numerous dead were carried away by their relatives soon after the blast, Captain Mohamed Hussein said.

A few hours before the blast, al-Shabaab denounced the new president as an "apostate" and vowed to continue fighting against his government.

The Horn of Africa country has been torn apart by civil war since 1991.
