Degrees In February: Temperatures In Boston And Buffalo Rewrite Record Book

On another record-breaking day of warmth in the Boston area Ryan McDowall of Milton worked up a sweat while snowboarding in a t-shirt at the Blue Hills Ski area which still had a pretty good base despite the high temperatures

The National Weather Service recorded a high of 74 degrees in Newark, breaking the old record of 73 degrees set in 1985.

For only the third time in Buffalo's weather recorded history dating back to 1870, the temperature reached 70 degrees in February.

So warm, he said, that this month is already the second warmest February on record - since 1871, in fact.

That's the warmest February temperature ever recorded, the weather service said.

On Feb. 26, 2000, the thermometer also crested to 71 degrees.

Farther south, a different record was set: the earliest calendar-year occurrence for a 100-degree day in McAllen, Texas.

Temperatures reached 68 degrees, the National Weather Service announced Friday.

Both Worcester and Boston also saw record high days Thursday, reaching 62 and 63 degrees respectively.

Buffalo's record of 67 degrees on February 24 had stood for 111 years, according to the Buffalo News. This is when a cold front will move through and make temperatures drop from the 60s to the 40s by late Saturday. Normal highs for this time of year in the region are at just about 40 degrees.

Unfortunately, President Theodore Roosevelt had declined an invitation to attend a travelers' convention in Buffalo, and salaries at the water bureau were unexpectedly high.
