Florida congressman introduces bill to eliminate Environmental Protection Agency

Oklahoma's top law enforcement official since 2011, Pruitt fought often with former President Barack Obama's EPA.

"Trump's selection of Scott Pruitt to lead the Environmental Protection Agency is welcome news to America's farmers and ranchers - in fact, to all who are threatened by EPA's regulatory overreach - and should help provide a new degree of fairness for US agriculture", an earlier statement on the AFBF website said.

The Environmental Protection Agency is on the chopping block under the Trump administration.

Last week, Republicans in the House of Representatives took their disdain of environmental regulations to the next level by proposing a bill to completely eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency.

Scott Pruitt, Trump's controversial pick to head of the organization, still has a lawsuit against the EPA (and has sued them 13 times before) for regulating coal and gas emissions, one of its main purposes.

While the legislation is only just making its way to being brought before congress for approval, there are more immediate concerns for the EPA over its likely new chief nominated by the Trump administration.

Senate leadership has yet to schedule a confirmation vote on Pruitt's nomination.

The Republican congressman has gained support from several of his colleagues, and it appears that the elimination of the EPA would lead to each state governing oversight and regulations regarding the environment, Courier-Journal explains. Republicans, though, have said Pruitt is well-suited to handle the job.

"Pruitt's record and public statements strongly suggest that he does not share the vision or agree with the underlying principles of our environmental laws".

A major issue for Durbin - as there will be for other Democrats in the Senate - is Pruitt's skepticism of climate change.

Pruitt now serves as the Attorney General of Oklahoma.

About 300 people with the Sierra Club protested Pruitt's nomination outside the EPA's Chicago office and about a third of the protesters work for the agency. In an email obtained by The Huffington Post, Gaetz clarified that "as conservatives, we must understand that states and local communities are best positioned to responsibly regulate the environmental assets within their jurisdictions".
