Greenpeace Calls Senators Who Voted To Confirm Rex Tillerson Spineless

Elizabeth Warren has ripped into Rex Tillerson, President Donald Trump's nominee for secretary of state.

Finally, the third Democratic senator who voted for Tillerson is Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota. John McCain of Arizona and Marco Rubio of.

In naming Tillerson, Trump called him an "embodiment of the American Dream" and cited the oil executive's "tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics".

Several Democrats said they had no confidence Mr Sessions would be able to stand up to Mr Trump.

Two of the more controversial Secretary of State picks in the past few decades, Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice, made it through confirmation with significantly wider margins than Mr Tillerson - 78 to 7 for former; 85 to 13 for the latter.

Tillerson will also have to deal with the diplomatic fallout from seven majority-Muslim countries whose residents are temporarily banned from entering the United States.

Asked to state his position on climate change during his confirmation hearing, Tillerson replied that the increases in greenhouse gas concentrations "are having an effect", but said "our ability to predict that effect is very limited". "There is no question that the committee and the Senate has fulfilled its constitutional responsibility in carefully reviewing his nomination".

Tillerson surpassed 51 votes for him, enough for a simple majority to approve his nomination.

The rule requires at least one Democrat be present for a vote. They have also voiced concern over Trump's desire to have better relations with Russian Federation; however, the two senators have not indicated they will hold up Tillerson's nomination. Others anxious that Tillerson's lack of government experience was a problem, especially since President Trump also has that gap in his resume.

"Putting a company's interest before American interest is inexcusable and a disqualifying characteristic for America's next secretary of State", Donnelly said. This was not surprising, as last week, Manchin became the first Democratic senator to back Tillerson.

In 2013, the Kremlin bestowed the country's Order of Friendship honour on the oil boss - who went on to argue against sanctions at a shareholders' meeting the following year.
