Jets hoping to recoup Revis' guaranteed money

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis turned himself in to police in Pittsburgh on Friday evening after being involved in an altercation over the weekend that led to Revis being charged with four felonies and a misdemeanor.

Revis' attorney, Blaine Jones, told ESPN that he was trying to get Revis to surrender to police.

People see four felony charges and a version of events in a police report based on witnesses whose credibility and motives are unknown, and they think the worst.

Two men - Dallas Cousins and Zacheriah Jarvis - claim the 31-year-old punched them and knocked them out cold after he allegedly freaked out when they started filming him with a smart phone early in the hours of February 12.

"He wanted to turn himself in", Jones said according to Goldstein, "he didn't want to be a fugitive from the law".

Rich Cimini of ESPN.com summarizes the incident report, pointing out that there is now no specific evidence that Revis punched either of the two victims.

Revis clenched his fists and asked a man, "Do you want to be next?" after two his friends were knocked unconscious in a South Side street fight Sunday, according to a police report obtained by PennLive. Cousins confronted Revis, who acknowledged his identity.

Police say the alleged fight started when a 22-year-old man, not identified in the statement, spotted Revis walking. Cousins said he then tried to retrieve his phone from Revis, but was unsuccessful, and Revis "threw his phone in the middle of E. Carson Street attempting to break it".

Whether or not Revis will even be eligible to play come 2017 still remains to be seen as of the current situation from Friday night. Cousins and Jarvis told the police they "were punched, then remember waking up to talk to police". There was also an unidentified man who helped Revis. Revis is scheduled to make $13 million in 2017, so one option would have been to restructure his contract and take the salary down closer to the guaranteed money.

The 31-year-old is also facing a misdemeanour charge of making terroristic threats and will attend a preliminary hearing on February 23. Once one of the league's top cornerbacks, his play slipped enough past year that he is viewed as a candidate to be cut next month based on his $15.3 million salary-cap figure.
