Krauthammer on Flynn-Russia Report: 'There Is No Crime'

Nine current and former officials, who were in senior positions at multiple agencies at the time of the calls, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

President Trump's national security adviser, Michael Flynn, privately discussed USA sanctions against Russian Federation with its ambassador to the us before the president took office last month even though officials claimed he didn't, The Washington Post reported late Thursday night.

"Obviously every ambassador informs the center [Moscow] about all the contacts he has so the information gets to us, but we are not willing to comment on internal discussions being held in Washington", he added.

On Thursday as this news was breaking, Flynn walked back his previous disavowal, saying that although he didn't remember talking about sanctions, he wasn't positive whether or not that subject was broached.

One of the calls took place on December 29, the day the Obama administration hit Moscow with sanctions in response to a USA intelligence assessment that the Russian government had interfered in the us presidential election with the goal of helping Trump.

The Post said Flynn denied Wednesday discussing sanctions with the ambassador during their conversation in January.

Such a conversation could place Flynn in violation of the Logan Act, which bars private citizens from negotiating with foreign governments.

"The President and his National Security Advisor have given the Russians the impression that whatever they do, they are not to worry, because the Trump White House will not stand against their aggression", Pelosi said in a statement on Saturday. The allegations led to calls from Democrats for Flynn to be dismissed while some prominent Republicans were tepid in their support.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Flynn had discussed sanctions imposed by former President Barack Obama's administration with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, before President Donald Trump took office, contradicting assertions by both Flynn and Pence.

That said, the president should without a doubt sack Flynn.

That's not true, according to new reports from The Washington Post and The New York Times. The Times also reported that Trump felt Flynn talked too much, and Trump ordered his team to remove Flynn's son from the transition team after the younger Flynn tweeted an untrue conspiracy theory.

The FBI investigation into Flynn's contacts with Kisylak is ongoing.

Trump defended Vladimir Putin this week after a Fox News reporter called the Russian president "a killer". Flynn told Kislyak that Moscow should refrain from responding to the sanctions too harshly.

Vice President Mike Pence has denied that Flynn discussed the sanctions with Russian Federation before entering the White House.
