Leo Messi spares Barcelona more pain against Leganes

Lionel Messi's late penalty saw bedraggled Barcelona scrape a 2-1 victory over Leganes on Sunday at a divided Nou Camp as the La Liga champions looked as if they had still not recovered from their harrowing midweek defeat against Paris St Germain.

Barca were thrashed 4-0 by Paris St Germain on Tuesday and nearly fell victim to another shock as Leganes looked on course to snatch an unlikely draw at the Nou Camp.

It was Messi's second goal of the game after he had given the Catalans an early lead but Unai Lopez stunned the favourites with a 71st-minute equaliser before the Argentinian's late heroics.

Messi, however, held his nerve to convert an 89th-minute penalty, which moves Barca to within one point of Real Madrid at the top of the table.

In the aftermath of that defeat, Sergio Busquets and Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta appeared to blame Luis Enrique's tactics for the loss, amid Spanish reports suggesting that the dressing room has lost faith in their manager.

The final opportunity of the first half also fell to Leganes and only a brilliant reaction save from Ter Stegen prevented a deflected effort from El Zhar deservedly levelling the scores for the improving visitors.

The hosts pushed forward in search of a victor but Leganes barely gave up a chance.

Leganes remains in 17th, two points above the relegation zone.

Barcelona's next clear chance arrived just before the 30-minute mark when Suarez released Messi with a fine pass inside the Leganes box, but the away side's on-loan goalkeeper Iago Herrerin was out to make a smart save. They were joined by Barcelona B midfielder Carles Aleñá, who continues to work with the first-team after he was named in last Saturday's squad, featuring as an unused substitute in the 6-0 win over Alaves.
