Lightning, Leafs finalizing Boyle trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs have plugged a year-long hole at the fourth-line centre spot, swinging a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning for Brian Boyle on Monday afternoon.

Boyle, 32, was drafted 23th overall by the Kings in 2003 and played with the Rangers before spending the last three years with Tampa.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are at risk of missing the playoffs this season due to various injuries and underwhelming play at various stretches of the season. He has 13 goals and nine assists in 54 games with Tampa this season. Boyle spent five season on Broadway, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2014 and again in 2015 as a member of the Lightning.

Boyle is at the end of a contract paying him a $2,000,000 cap hit. The 6-foot, 205-pound forward has skated in 58 career National Hockey League games, all with Toronto over the past two seasons, collecting two goals and five points.

It seemed unlikely the Lightning would have been able to keep Boyle and Bishop in the offseason so trading them now instead of losing them for nothing made sense.

Froese, 25, skated in two games with the Maple Leafs this season.

While it's certainly tough to see Boyle go, this is another one of those business moves that Steve Yzerman mentioned after the business trade. Some of the notable players that the Lightning need to extend include Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat and Jonathan Drouin among others.

ONE MILBURY: The Lightning were proactive in getting pieces for a veteran they wouldn't have been able to afford in the offseason.

Nothing is given in the cutthroat Atlantic Division, and with a clear shot at the playoffs, the upstart Maple Leafs are gearing up to make the most of their unexpected success.
