Many teens use e-cigarettes for 'dripping' liquid nicotine

Doctors at Yale say a quarter of teens who smoke e-cigarettes use a technique called "dripping".

The one in four teens data was found during a 2015 survey from over 7,000 students in eight different CT high schools.

Big U.S. tobacco companies are all developing e-cigarettes, battery-powered gadgets with a heating element that turns liquid nicotine and flavorings into a cloud of vapor that users inhale.

The culprit, according to the CDC, is the liquid nicotine in the e-cigarettes.

People who drip say it tastes better and produces a thicker cloud of vapor, but it also increases the amount of nicotine and unsafe chemicals like formaldehyde. While e-cigarettes may contain less toxicants than cigarettes, e-cigarettes contain many other chemicals like propylene glycol and glycerin which when heated at high temperatures (like with "dripping") can produce high levels of carcinogenic compounds like aldehydes.

Additionally, dripping was most prevalent among white males and respondents who had tried more tobacco products or used an e-cigarette more in the past month.

Krishnan-Sarin said that people who use e-cigarettes tend to puff on them throughout the day, but researchers don't know the consequences of exposing lungs to the vapors.

Better flavor was the reason cited by almost two out of five students who dripped, and simple curiosity attracted 22 percent.

Electronic cigarettes (ECIGs) electrically heat and vaporize a liquid solution to produce an inhalable nicotine-containing aerosol.

The authors called for additional research into the dangers of dripping and more education for youths. As well as, if dripping was just a novelty or done regularly.

"This points out why we need FDA providing oversight over these products and how they're being used in the real world", Billings said.

"All vapor products, including those that do not contain nicotine, should be kept out of the hands of youth".

The study authors refer to "studies on emissions performed with machines, but ignore evidence that actual human vapers recognize aldehyde production very early in its formation and find it so intolerable that they will quickly take action to ensure that it does not continue", he added.
