Mark Zuckerberg Wants To Use AI To Stop Terrorist Recruiters

Facebook wants users to define 'objectionable' content

Zuckerberg asserts now is the time for Facebook to "develop the social infrastructure to give people the power to build a global community that works for all of us". Some people argued his company was unfairly silencing right-wing political voices, while others complained Facebook's algorithm was spreading conspiracy theories and "fake news."

Zuckerberg, who says he isn't going to run for United States president, also addresses how the world can be made safer by Facebook, how people should connect more offline and build more relationships.

Zuckerberg said when Facebook began its journey, this idea was not controversial and as the world got more connected, it was seen as a positive trend. "For the past decade, Facebook has focused on connecting friends and families", Zuckerberg writes in the letter.

Zuckerberg wrote that Facebook stands for "building a global community", and that recently people have been questioning whether it is possible to build a global community that works for everyone.

Of the issue around Fake news and the sharing of sensationalist headlines within the platform, he said that he hoped to introduce a measure within user's personal settings to offer the community options to see what they did and did not want.

"These mistakes are nearly never because we hold ideological positions at odds with the community, but instead are operational scaling issues".

That's the question Mark Zuckerberg used Thursday to kick off an open letter to the Facebook community he helped to build. Throughout the entire letter, the CEO of Facebook fill out on five goals: to help users built communities that are supportive, safe, informed, civically-engaged, and inclusive. It sets new priorities for the company: strengthen and support existing civil institutions, increase voting and democratic participation, help people feel and be safer, improve the quality of information users access, and promote inclusion locally and globally. "History is the story of how we've learned to come together in ever greater numbers-from tribes to cities to nations", he writes.

"Artificial intelligence can help provide a better approach".

"We are researching systems that can look at photos and videos to flag content our team should review", Zuckerberg explains.

Mark Zuckerberg posted the letter amid a ferocious debate over the merits of globalization. Last year, Britain voted to quit the European Union.

On the subject of artificial intelligence, the Facebook CEO writes: "There have been terribly tragic events - like suicides, some live streamed - that perhaps could have been prevented if someone had realized what was happening and reported them sooner".

However, Zuckerberg stayed away from making any direct reference to US President Donald Trump's stance on cross-border movement of people or Brexit.
