McCain Opposes Trump Pick to Lead Budget Office

The Senate confirmed Mick Mulvaney as President Donald Trump's choice to run the Office of Management and Budget in a narrow 51-49 vote. Sen.

South Carolina's Mick Mulvaney will learn whether he will become the next American budget chief at a vote now scheduled for 7 a.m. Thursday.

Senators Thad Cochran, R-Miss., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, had also previously expressed uncertainty about Mulvaney's nomination, raising questions about whether he would be confirmed.

No Democrat or independent senator voted in favor of his nomination Thursday. John McCain, R-Ariz., said he was considering breaking party lines and voting against Mulvaney's confirmation.

McCain noted that while President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to rebuild the military, Mulvaney, a congressman from SC has repeatedly sought to cut military funding.

McCain says Mulvaney has a "poor record on defense spending" that is "fundamentally at odds with President Trump's commitment to rebuild our military".

As its head, Mulvaney will assist the president in preparing the annual federal budget.

"He said to me in a one-on-one meeting how he would prioritize the debts he would pay if he defaulted on the debt", said Sen. "I fear Congressman Mulvaney does not".

McCain said on the Senate floor that Mulvaney's ardent opposition to defense spending was why he couldn't support him.

Mulvaney is reportedly eyeing sharp cuts to domestic agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, but Trump has indicated he's not interested in tackling highly popular benefit programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Trump has said that strengthening the military is more important than balancing the budget and is committed to ending budget caps.
