McLaren and BMW partner to develop new engine technology

McLaren and BMW are collaborating to develop the next generation of combustion technology.

McLaren is to work with BMW again on future engine tech - bringing back memories of the Munich-powered V12 F1.

BMW and McLaren are officially joining forces in the pursuit of horsepower.

McLaren specifically mentions that the project will deliver "new combustion technology'" meant to eke more output per capacity than is now possible, all while reducing Carbon dioxide emissions. We are told that it is anticipated that the new technology will deliver a higher output per capacity than now possible with conventional technology.

The plan is to increase the specific output-the amount of power per unit volume-of the engines in McLaren's forthcoming road cars while trying to meet socially acceptable Carbon dioxide limits.

Now, in a part-funded project from the United Kingdom government through the Advanced Propulsion Center (APC), McLaren Automotive will lead six other companies in developing successor technologies.

The project forms a part of McLaren's Track22 plan, which includes a £1 billion investment into research and development over the next five years with a view to launching 15 new cars by 2022.

Commenting on the collaboration, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive, Mike Flewitt, said: 'This is an exciting project that plays to the strengths of all partners.

The engine, dubbed M838T, has been in service since the introduction of McLaren's first 21st century supercar, the MP4-12C in mid-2011, and also forms the combustion element of its cutting-edge P1 hybrid powertrain.

The strategic partnership announced today by McLaren Automotive, aims to design and develop technology for the next generation of high performance, low carbon powertrains. Lentus Composites will contribute its background in specialist composite structures, while the University of Bath will add its R&D in internal combustion engine systems efficiency.
