Most banks and courts closed for President's Day

"I thought the objective of Presidents' Day was getting steep discounts on mattresses and furniture". George Washington was a natural aristocrat, a man of impeccable probity and great personal courage, whose dignity and humility after kicking King George in the trousers set a new standard not for American political leaders but for political leaders per se.

The act shifted Washington's Birthday holiday from Feb. 22 - Washington's actual birthday - to the third Monday of February. The retailers did their marketing homework, and discovered that for some unknown reason, the generic "Presidents' Day" sales events generated greater revenue than the sales focused only upon George Washington's birthday. Contrary to popular belief, neither Congress nor the President has ever stipulated that the name of the holiday observed as Washington's birthday be changed to "President's Day".

But not only is its identity fractured and its place time-warped, the very raison d'etre for Presidents Day remains a source of contentious debate.

This holiday in honor of Washington's birthday was the first day to be designated a federal holiday to honor any individual American citizen. "It moved the holiday from a fixed calendar date to the third Monday of February".

Sponsors of the 1968 bill wanted to call it Presidents Day because Abraham Lincoln's February 12 birthday was celebrated as a holiday in many states. Most banks will be closed and the U.S. Postal Service is closed in observance of Presidents' Day.

Pop quiz: What holiday are we celebrating? Some of them took Washington's example to heart: Lincoln was incapable of personal grandiosity, Coolidge eschewed pomp and ceremony and Eisenhower insisted that he be laid out in the plain pine box of an ordinary soldier, wearing a field jacket with no medals or ribbons on it.

"An interesting thought. According to Snopes.com, a bill was introduced in Congress called the Washington-Lincoln Recognition Act of 2001. But the bill was never passed into law".

That's what led me to these Lincoln and Washington masks which would surely be a hit among young children, and a great prop for reading aloud the words of two of our greatest presidents.

"Well, you have to understand that federal holidays only apply to federal offices and agencies". It is important to honor any presidents who honored the original vision of freedom, and how they honored such a vision by their courageous actions at the risk of their lives.

If your state celebrates more than just George Washington today, fine. "But some states have some interesting ways of observing birthdays". He was the first person in America to have a federal holiday established by Congress in 1879, named for him in celebration of his contribution to founding this nation and serving as its first president.
