MP Buck votes against triggering Article 50 on Brexit

The rearguard action against Brexit is likely to be most fierce in the Lords where the government does not have a majority and members are not answerable to voters

The drop comes ahead of a UK Parliament debate on a series of amendments to the Brexit Bill, although they are not expected to pass and delay the Brexit bill becoming law.

Steve Baker, chairman of the European Reform Group of Euro-sceptic MPs, said the amendments were "all unnecessary and some of them are wrecking".

Its amendment stipulates that the rights of European Union nationals in the United Kingdom would be guaranteed on the date when Article 50 is invoked to begin the two-year formal withdrawal negotiations.

The Government has been accused of a staging "con" to "dupe" MPs from voting against its plans for a hard Brexit - without actually giving them any genuinely concessions.

The government wants to notify the European Union of its intention to leave, giving effect to last June's referendum vote and starting two years of talks, by the end of March.

Scotland opposes leaving the EU's single market as part of Brexit therefore First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was allowing the Scottish MPs to voice their opinion.

Today's Commons Brexit battle will focus on an amendment calling for a "meaningful" vote on whatever the Prime Minister agrees with Brussels.

And Downing Street played down suggestions that it amounted to a concession to potential Conservative rebels, insisting that it merely clarified the timing of the vote promised by Mrs May in her Lancaster House speech last month.

The Labour leader has imposed a three-line whip requiring his MPs to support legislation that will enable the Government to trigger Brexit. The vote will not be written in the Article 50 bill but is instead guaranteed by Theresa May's government.

Despite suggestions that up to 30 Tory MPs could defy their party whip and back the Labour amendment just seven chose to do so. "The Minister refused to give Parliament the option to reject the deal and tell the Government to go back to negotiate a better one".

Keir Starmer, Brexit spokesman for the opposition Labour Party, called the announcement a "huge and very important concession", but demanded more details.
