North Korean leader's brother assassinated at Kuala Lumpur airport

Malaysia have detained a second woman over the death of the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-un

Leader Kim Jong-un has vowed to root out corruption starting late last year and in his New Year's speech this year.

Police released a statement saying the woman was carrying Vietnamese travel documents when she was arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Her passport identified her as Doan Thi Huong. It also said CCTV footage showed the other suspects, aged between 20 and 50, at the airport on Monday. She was nabbed when she returned to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 to catch a flight to Vietnam on Wednesday. Neither of his sisters, who are thought to be part of the North Korean government, would stand much of a chance of rising to power in the highly patriarchal country. Police would not comment when asked whether the body would be handed over to his family in Macau or to North Korea, which wants to claim it. South Korean media is reporting that Kim was in his 40s. Kim Jong Nam was the eldest, followed by Kim Jong Chul, who is a few years older than Kim Jong Un and is known as a playboy who reportedly attended an Eric Clapton concert in London in 2015.

Airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings yesterday gave the assurance that KLIA2 is safe, calling Monday's incident an isolated one.

The 45-year-old was poisoned by two unidentified female agents using poisoned needles at an airport in Kuala Lumpur, according to South Korean broadcaster TV Chosun. Details of the post-mortem however has yet to be announced, The Star newspaper reported.

There have been conflicting reports about how poison - which a police officer said was "more potent than cyanide" - was administered to Mr Kim. "At the clinic, the victim experienced a mild seizure". "He was put into an ambulance and was being taken to the Putrajaya Hospital when he was pronounced dead". He has since lived in virtual exile, mainly in the Chinese territory of Macau.

"Yes, nearly certainly", North Korea expert Van Jackson told Bloomberg.

A day after the assassination of Mr Kim Jong Nam, half-brother of the North Korean leader Mr Kim Jong Un, speculation has swirled over the possible motive and the two women killers.

Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Un have the same father, late dictator Kim Jong Il, but different mothers.

The South Korean government says it is waiting for the Malaysian police to complete their investigation into the incident, but if it's confirmed that Kim Jong-un ordered his half brother's death, he will be unable to avoid worldwide condemnation.
