Powerful "boost mode" for old games hidden in latest PlayStation 4 update

Bad Performance of Film Unit Persuades Sony to Cut Down On Its Outlook

With the next software update, PS4 owners will be able to download, install, and access games on an external hard drive. Console storage has never been great, but with games sometimes taking up more than 80GB a pop, it hasn't been hard for people to fill up the storage that came with their device. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilĂ , you now have more space on the console.

That means no more deleting games to make room, and support for up to 8TB drives. Hard drives of up to 8 terabytes are supported, and you can manage their data via the PS4's "Applications Saved Data Management" menu. This firmware update looks to be one of the biggest the PlayStation has had, with many new features, and functionality to the core operating system in addition to cosmetic updates.

While we're still unsure when this update will roll out for gamers, Sony has unveiled some of the new features to be added in through a post on the official PlayStation Blog. But then you're also stuck with an otherwise perfectly good 500GB hard drive that's now become a shelf ornament.

In the past, the only way you could really expand the memory of the PlayStation 4 is to buy a much larger SATA-based drive and installing it into your system.

This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4's home screen. This will allow it to improve performance for all games, even if they haven't been patched to support it.

So why is external hard drive support so important to a company like Sony?

Notifications have been simplified in update 4.50, ditching the separate tab for every notification variation and opting instead to show everything in line in a simple list.

You'll be able to watch 3D Blu-ray movies in stereoscopic 3D on your PSVR headset.

The PlayStation 4 has always been able to play blu-rays, but now any 3D blu-ray can be viewed in the proper form by using the PlayStation VR.
