President Trump Press Conference To Announce Labor Pick

"Working people stood together and proved with Andy Puzder's withdrawal as labor secretary nominee that when we join together we can fight back", Henry said in a release.

President Donald Trump acted quickly following the resignation of his embattled pick for Secretary of Labor to nominate a candidate who, so far, appears to be a less contentious choice.

He also served as an assistant attorney general in the George W. Bush administration and as US attorney for the Southern District of his native Florida, where he prosecuted a number of high-profile cases - including that of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to the New York Times. Acosta was the first Latino to serve as an assistant attorney general. As U.S. Attorney, Acosta focused on health care fraud violations and targeted white collar crime.

Acosta, the only son of Cuban immigrants, gradually reconnected with Miami and cultivated strong relationships in the legal and law enforcement community to build up the USA attorney's office in his image.

Acosta, dean of the Florida International University law school in Miami, served on the National Labor Relations Board from December 2002 to August 2003, and as a federal prosecutor in Florida.

Acosta is also not a stranger to Washington D.C. and does have vast experience in employment law.

At the time he was hired, the now-former FIU president, Modesto A. Maidique, said in a release, "I am confident that Alex Acosta's energy and his passion for the law and commitment to FIU and our community will take our law school to the next level".

Andrew Puzder on Wednesday withdrew his nomination to be the next labor secretary, notching a rare victory for Senate Democrats. Acosta, who has served in several Senate-confirmed positions, is likely to be approved easily.

"Our next secretary of Labor must fully respect our laws created to protect American workers", Henderson said.

Acosta has been a staunch defender of the civil rights of Muslims who faced a backlash after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

"The Labor Secretary is not just another Cabinet member - his or her actions directly impact our wages, safety and rights on the job every single day". A senior GOP source told CNN that four Republicans would vote against Puzder, and more were considering a no vote.

In January, the administration froze a regulation that would have extended overtime pay to 4 million more workers.
