Related Stress Took Its Toll On Americans

Almost half of Americans, 49 percent, say the outcome of the 2016 presidential election was also a source of stress, but there were differences depending on which party those polled belonged to.

Unsurprisingly, Democrats were far more stressed about Trump's election; 72% Democrats named the result of the 2016 presidential election as a significant source of stress, compared with just 26% of Republicans.

Still, 59 percent of Republicans and 76 percent of Democrats agreed that the future of the nation was a significant source of stress.

In order to avoid elevated stress levels, researchers recommend turning off the TV and taking up hobbies or spending more time with family.

The APA findings-contained in their Stress In America: Coping With Change (pdf) report-reveal that 57 percent of those surveyed said that politics have become either a "very" or "somewhat" significant source of anxiety in their lives. When the negative feelings didn't ease up, APA did another survey in January to capture stress levels post-election.

On Feb. 15, a survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the American Psychological Association (APA) found that more than half of national adults drew stress from politics.

The survey also found an increase in Americans reporting significant stress for their personal safety - from 29 percent to 34 percent since August, the highest its been since the question was first included in the study. Rural Americans were the most serene about Trump's victory, with only 33 percent feeling stress about the election result. Exit polls showed that while 57 percent of all white voters cast ballots for Trump, only 21 percent of non-white voters did so, with 74 percent of non-whites voting for Clinton. Respondents reporting at least one health symptom because of stress rose from 71% to 80% over five months.

"Read enough to stay informed but then plan activities that give you a regular break from the issues and the stress they might cause", she said.

Minority groups, millennials, those living in urban areas and those with a college education had higher levels of stress about the election.

Fifty-seven percent of those polled said that the current political situation is a significant source of stress, and 66 percent said that the nation's future is a significant source of stress. "It seems to suggest that what people thought would happen, that there would be relief [after the election] did not occur, and instead since the election, stress has increased".
