Russian planes buzzed USA warship in Black Sea, defense official says

The US says several Russian military planes flew close to a US destroyer last week

Multiple Russian aircraft buzzed a US destroyer patrolling in the Black Sea last week, in an incident the captain of the American ship called "unsafe", the Pentagon said Tuesday.

One of the incidents, the USA official said, involved two supersonic Su-24 attack jets.

The incident "was deemed unsafe and unprofessional because of various factors including low altitude and high speed", said Lt. Col. David Faggard, a command spokesman.

While Moscow denied the claims, the encounters allegedly occurred on the last day of Sea Shield 2017 - NATO's maritime maneuvers in the Black Sea.

An armed Russian Su-24, a supersonic attack aircraft, flew within 200 yards of the ship last week, reports NBC News.

The spokesperson also pointed out that the U.S. destroyer was conducting routine maritime operations in global waters in the Black Sea after it concluded Exercise Sea Shield. "Such incidents are concerning because they can result in accident or miscalculation", he added.

Russian aircraft harassed a destroyer in the Black Sea participating in exercises with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces. The commander of Porter determined the actions were unsafe and unprofessional.

Konashenkov was surprised to hear the United States military were astonished to see Russian fighters so close to Russian borders. The drills in the vicinity of Constanta, Romania, took place February 1-10.

A Russian spy ship has also been spotted patrolling off the east coast of the U.S. on 14 February.

This month, President Donald Trump told Fox News that while he respects Russian President Vladimir Putin, it "doesn't mean I am going to get along with him".

Russian planes buzzed a United States warship in the Black Sea as it was conducting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation exercises, American officials said.

The three recent incidents were reportedly less provocative than Russia's buzzing of the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea in April a year ago with two Sukhoi Su-24 Fencers.
