Russia's UN Envoy Vitaly Churkin Dies Suddenly In New York

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has died suddenly in NY.

"A prominent Russian diplomat has passed away while at work".

The Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin, died in NY on Monday the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Tass news agency quoted Churkin's deputy Pyotr Ilyichev as saying: "The loss sustained by Russian Federation is grave and irreplaceable".

Suspicions are mounting in the death of a Russian Ambassadors death in New York City late Monday. "He devoted his whole life to defending the interests of Russian Federation and was to be found on the very front lines and in the most stressful posts". "He was [always] at the front line, taking the most challenging appointments", Iliichev said. "We'd like to express our honest condolences to Vitaly Churkin's family'. He was brilliant, bright, a great diplomat of our age", Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told RT, adding that the news of Churkin's death was "completely shocking". "The president was grieved to learn about the death of Vitaly Churkin", spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to the state news agency TASS.

Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin was born in Moscow in 1952.

He then focused on his studies, eventually graduating from the prestigious Moscow Institute of International Relations and started at the foreign ministry first as a translator before working at the Soviet Embassy in Washington for several years in the 1980s.

Before he was appointed to represent Russian Federation at the United Nations in May 2006, the diplomat served as ambassador to Belgium, ambassador to Canada, and liaison ambassador to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the Western European Union (WEU).
