Thousands protest Trump in Mexico City

YURI CORTEZ

Tens of thousands of Mexicans protested Sunday against US President Donald Trump, hitting back at his anti-Mexican rhetoric and his pledges to make their country pay for his "big, beautiful" border wall.

"We want demonstrate to all of those who suffer discrimination in the United States that we are with them", said Ana Fernanda Islas, a university student. Some signs read "Respect Mexico" and "We are all Mexico".

Trump signed an executive order last month calling for construction to begin on the border wall, a signature campaign promise that he has vowed Mexico will pay for - even as the Republican-controlled Congress makes plans to initially fund the wall with USA tax money.

Trump has also wrought havoc on the Mexican economy with his threats to terminate the country's trade relationship with the USA, blaming Mexico for the loss of jobs in the country.

The protesters waved Mexican flags and held anti-Trump signs during the march on Sunday through central Mexico City.

The Los Angeles Times reported that one sign read: "Trump, pay for your own wall!"

When asked why she had made a decision to take part in the march, a protester told Al Jazeera: "Putting it in words, there's this hate that he seems to have for us, when we've never done anything to the United States".

Irene Aguilar, a university professor, said the main message of the marchers was to show the unity of Mexicans in the face of adversity.

Videgaray added that in some US states over the past three or four days, there had been signs of changes in some procedures relating to the treatment of undocumented migrants, and that in California, there had been more visible operations against migrants.

Trump suggested that his involvement in the design of the controversial wall would help to bring down the estimated $21 billion (£16.8 billion) it will take to construct the barrier.

Last week, immigration agents conducted numerous raids around the country, scooping up hundreds of undocumented immigrants. "Mexico has never been so threatened and never have we had a government so incompetent".

As the protests began to unfold, Mexican presidential hopeful Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced he will be visiting the U.S. to address both Mexicans and Americans in Los Angeles about Trump's "poisonous" rhetoric.
