Townships Declare Snow Emergencies Ahead of Storm

Northern areas of DE such as Wilmington are expected to be impacted by inclement weather first, with rain starting between midnight and 4 a.m. Thursday before transitioning into heavy snow that may make some roads impassable just in time for the morning commute.

Officials encouraged people to stay inside as much as possible, and keep off the slippery roads. The warning is in effect through Thursday at 6 p.m.

Risky travel conditions were forecast for I-95 cities from Philadelphia to New York City and Boston, the National Weather Service said. By mid-morning, 6.4 inches had accumulated in Danbury and Newtown.

A blizzard warning means that heavy snow and strong winds will significantly reduce visibility.

Center City got just over two inches of snow, with the northern part of the city accumulating more, said Director of Emergency Management Samantha Phillips.

Patton Township announced that a snow emergency will be in effect as of 12:01 a.m. Thursday and parking on the street will be prohibited for as long as the emergency is in effect.

Townships Declare Snow Emergencies Ahead of Storm

The biggest and longest-lasting snowstorms, including a blizzard that dumped the heaviest amount of snow on record in NY a year ago, tend to occur when such blocking patterns are in place, prolonging the period in which heavy snow can fall.

All New Jersey state offices are closed for non-essential employees, Gov. Christie says. The heavy downpour is expected to last through Saturday morning, meteorologists forecast. Forecasters said that would be slightly weaker than the wind strength required to classify the storm as a blizzard.

Flightaware.com reported that airlines had canceled more than 2,700 flights affecting the United States on Thursday. It's rapidly intensifying low pressure system raced from the Delmarva peninsular northeastward into the Atlantic, well off the coast of Long Island and Cape Cod, but close enough to spread blizzard conditions inland.

Winds are estimated to be 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

I want to emphasise to all New Yorkers, stay inside if you can. At least one woman used skis to get around. Meanwhile, cars and other vehicles proceeded cautiously in the blowing snow, some of them skidding on the hillier stretches of adjoining Lexington Avenue, a major southbound artery in Manhattan. Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing and remain there through Friday.
