Trump pledges to protect U.S. jobs during visit to Boeing plant

"That is one attractive airplane", the president said in his opening remarks, gesturing to a 787 on display behind him.

"Right here in the United States of America", he said.

S.C. GOP Chairman Matt Moore said the president's visit still means a bump for SC, even as the stop was more business-orient than part of the party boosting apparatus.

As Trump toured the facility, an estimated crowd of 5,000 waited patiently in a huge aircraft assembly room, periodically cheering the self-congratulatory Boeing videos showing on big screens at either side of the expanse and waving signs that read "South Carolina Loves President Trump".

Echoing elements of his campaign and his inaugural address, President Donald Trump pledged to put America back to work against the backdrop of one of the new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner planes.

"The name says it all: Dreamliner", Trump said.

"We want to make it much easier - it has to be much easier - to manufacture in our country, and much harder to leave".

In December, Trump called out Boeing and CEO Dennis Mullenberg on Twitter for the high price of Air Force One.

President Donald Trump on Friday heaped praise on Boeing Co. and suggested the USA government could increase its business with the aviation company as he delivered an economic-themed speech that had many campaign trail overtones. The new Boeing aircraft will be sent to customers from 2018.

The president said he will ensure that "our great service members have the tools, equipment, training, and resources they need to get the job done".

The speech represented a return to the core economic message of Trump's campaign.

Trump's visit to the Boeing plant also comes at a time when the Trump administration is struggling to establish a greater sense of order and focus after weeks of distractions and negative headlines.

A day earlier, Trump held a rollicking 77-minute news conference in which he denied reports detailing a White House consumed by chaos, deepened his ongoing feud with the media and parried questions about his team's ties to Russian Federation.

Boeing rolled the first 787-10 out of the factory on Thursday. "I will never, ever disappoint you; believe me, I will not disappoint you". "Congrats to the men and women here who have built it". What an awesome piece of art. "What an wonderful piece of work".

Trump flew in on the now almost 30-year-old Air Force One, a Boeing 747. Last March, the Government Accountability Office, the government's auditing arm, estimated total program costs at more than $3.2 billion, mostly for research and development through the 2020 budget year.

"That plane, as lovely as it looks, is 30 years old", Trump said, pointing to the Boeing 747 that serves as Air Force One.

Asked earlier Wednesday about the vote, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said he didn't feel unions were needed in the state, where Boeing and other companies have been successful, and where, he feels, workers are generally happy.
