Uber calls Waymo's lawsuit 'baseless' - Roadshow

Filing its lawsuit in a federal court in San Francisco, Waymo alleged that Uber is using a stolen technology in its self-driving cars.

The lawsuit that Waymo has filed against the two companies revolves around the accusation that Levandowski had inappropriately acquired confidential files from Waymo's server and used it in Uber's self-driving vehicle project.

"We are incredibly proud of the progress that our team has made", an Uber spokeswoman said Friday in a statement.

It did so by acquiring a startup called Otto that was co-founded by a former Waymo staffer named Anthony Levandowski.

Levandowski is now heading Uber's self-driving efforts at their Advanced Technology Center in Pittsburgh.

Yesterday, news came out about Waymo's decision to file a lawsuit against Uber and Otto.

Waymo's lawsuit seeks damages from Uber, along with an injunction against the company, stopping it from unfair competitive practices.

In the complaint, Waymo alleges, "as of August 2016, Uber had no in-house solution for LiDAR", but then had its own custom-built system the next year.

The lawsuit alleges that Mr Levandowski "downloading 14,000 highly confidential and proprietary design files" during his time as a Google employee.

"Its design bore a striking resemblance to Waymo's unique LiDAR design", Waymo said. Uber bought Otto for 0 million past year.

The blog post has further added that he installed specialized software on his Google-issued laptop to take off with about 9.7 GB of trade secrets, including blueprints, design files, and testing documentation.

In a blog post, Waymo said ex-employee Anthony Levandowski downloaded nearly 10 gigabytes of crucial information about its LiDAR system before wiping his computer and leaving for Uber.

Levandowski copied the data to an external drive.
