UC Berkeley community protests guest speaker Milo Yiannopoulos

Yiannopoulos echoed that sentiment Thursday.

In a statement posted to their website Thursday, the Berkeley College Republicans thanked campus police and university officials for "doing all they could to ensure the safety of everyone involved". "Nothing less will do".

Like other major US research universities, Berkeley depends on federal agencies for scientific grants and other support.

Only two weeks ago another protest forced the cancellation of a Yiannopolous event at UC Davis. In January, a man was shot and seriously wounded as fights broke out during one of those events at the University of Washington.

"A tweet from the establishment's Twitter account read: "'Milo event cancelled. Others counter that universities aren't required to pay security and other expenses for speakers invited by student groups. He was supposed to appear at a University of California, Davis event with former investor Martin Shkreli on January 14, but organizers canceled it after protests broke out at the venue.

"I'll let you know more when the facts become clear".

Yiannopoulos criticised "the Left", saying in a statement that it was "absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down".

Moreover, Trump cast Wednesday's ugly episode as evidence that "Berkeley does not allow free speech" when it is exactly the opposite.

Yiannopoulos' talks have sparked protests, shouting matches and occasional violence at stops around the country.

Protesters broke windows, set off fireworks, and threw smoke bombs and flares, creating a unsafe environment for students and the public.

The demonstrations began peacefully but escalated as the day went on, with some students smashing windows at the hall where Yiannopoulos was due to speak, the campus being put on lockdown and riot police firing tear gas, the BBC reported.

UC said campus officers tried several times to remove the crowd of about 1,500 gathered outside of the Martin Luther King Jr. student venue.

Someone threw red paint on Berkeley College Republican member Mike Wright as he spoke with a reporter, sfgate.com reports.

It's unclear how numerous protesters were Berkeley students, but in a statement, the university said the group of "agitators" came onto campus and interrupted a lawful protest.
