USA abortion legal test case woman Norma McCorvey aka Jane Roe dies

Norma McCorvey testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee along with Sandra Cano of Atlanta, Georgia, the "Doe" in the Doe v. Bolton Supreme Court case, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C on June 23, 2005.

1973's landmark "Roe v. Wade" Supreme Court decision is regarded to this day as the final ruling on women's abortion rights.

McCorvey was 22, unmarried, unemployed and pregnant for the third time in 1969 when she sought to have an abortion in Texas, where the procedure was illegal except to save a woman's life.

McCorvey died of heart failure in a Texas-assisted living home, confirmed Joshua Prager, a New York-based journalist who is writing a book about her and the decision to which she is irrevocably intertwined.

She described herself as "a simple woman with a ninth grade education" and said she was a victim of her lawyers, Linda Coffee and Sarah Washington, who she accused of exploiting her predicament for their own careers or ideological beliefs. She was involved in anti-abortion protests and was arrested for disrupting the 2009 confirmation hearings for then-Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotamayor.

The opinion said states could not regulate abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy but could choose to impose some regulations after that.

It established that the US Constitution protects the right of a woman to have an abortion until the point of viability.

By the time the Supreme Court announced its decision, McCorvey had given birth to her baby, whom she put up for adoption.

Interestingly, in her personal life, McCorvey actually shifted her position on abortion rights in later years and became a pro-life advocate in the years following the decision.

After her conversion, Morana said, "she used to say, 'I am Roe no more.' That was very important to her, that people would understand that she was no longer Roe".

McCorvey adopted the pseudonym Roe in order to argue her right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy in the landmark 1973 case. The justices are still divided ever so closely on Roe v. Wade. She's survived by a daughter and two grandchildren. When someone told her that Operation Rescue was moving next door to the Dallas abortion clinic where she worked, she said, she thought someone was playing an April Fools' joke on her. I never appeared in any court.
