Why I voted to confirm Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education

President Donald Trump has nominated former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue to be his agriculture secretary.

Rules requiring schools to allow transgender children to use the facilities of their gender, DeVos said, "suggested a one-size fits all, federal government approach" to an issue she believed was better left to states and schools.

The women discussed bullying, all right... of conservative children.

DeVos is famous for her support of charter schools, and supported for profit education in her state of MI.

Texas State Teachers Association President Ariel Deen, an EC-6 education student, declined to comment on the issue, but TSTA Vice President Ashley Reynolds believes that anyone in a high position in education, including school administrators, should have had public teaching experience, and is concerned with DeVos' lack thereof.

DeVos said she called Weingarten after her confirmation and they agreed to tour two schools together - one a traditional public school that Weingarten will choose and another selected by DeVos.

She is absolutely not a pushover-which is why the lesson to be learned from her part in Trump's attack on transgender students is that protecting transgender students is not a Betsy DeVos priority.

"I visited a school on Friday and met with some wonderful, genuine, honest teachers who pour their heart and soul into their classrooms and their students and our conversation was not long enough to draw out of them what is limiting them from being even more success from what they are now", DeVos said.

CNN commentator and Trump surrogate Kayleigh McEnany, who conducted DeVos' CPAC interview, lavished praise upon the newly confirmed education secretary. "The fight against the education establishment extends to you too", she said. She added, "The nation is so blessed to have you as secretary of education". The campaign is created to encourage and aid the filing of complaints concerning school anti-transgender discrimination with the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights. "But our lawsuit and the constitutional claims that we brought up are not dependent in any way on the Department of Education or the Trump administration".

The New York Times reported that a battle was emerging in the Trump Cabinet, between DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

There is no doubt where we stand on issues critical to supporting students and public education, but Americans have a right to know where she stands.

For many of these children, that free lunch at school is the only meal they will eat that day. Typically, attempts at educational reform are deemed a failure when they do not improve student achievement - but seldom do these "failures" actually involve students performing worse than they had previously.

DeVos, a Michigan-based school choice advocate and Republican fundraiser, explained simply her stance on education at the conference.

The public school system is a monopoly for most parents.

Additionally, the greater the number of choices, the smaller classroom sizes could become, giving teachers more time to help individual students.
