130-Day Manipur Blockade Lifted After Government Meets Naga Leaders

The United Naga Council (UNC) on Sunday has made a decision to end the 130-day long economic blockade against Manipur.

The decision to lift the blockade from Sunday midnight was taken at a tripartite meet with the state government, the United Naga Council (UNC) and the Centre on Sunday at Senapati district headquarters.

The blockade was imposed by the UNC on November 1 to protest against the creation of seven new districts by erstwhile O Ibobi Singh-led Congress government in the state.

The governor appealed to the leaders of UNC and their supporters to consider lifting of the blockade at the earliest keeping aside the stand-off between the UNC and the government. The representatives of All Naga Students Union of Manipur and Naga Women's Union also attended the tripartite talks on Sunday.

From midnight on Sunday, March 19, the Manipur blockade will be lifted. The United Naga Council has announced to lift the prolonged economic blockade from the National Highways of Manipur.

The Nagas alleged two of the new districts - Kangpokpi and Jiribam - will snatch their ancestral lands away from them.

This talks were occasioned by ongoing economic blockade by UNC since November 1 last on the issue of creation of new districts.

The Congress government chose to create seven new districts in October previous year. While Trivendra Singh Rawat took charge as Uttarakhand Chief Minister, former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikart also won a vote of trust in Goa and now in what could be the final frontier, the party is set to go through a floor test in Manipur on Wednesday morning.

The Manipur Chief Minister can induct three more ministers. The BJP's assurance was that the lifting of the blockade would be the first thing a government led by the party would deliver to the people of Manipur.

The tripartite talks were held initially on February 7 in Imphal for ending the blockade on two national highways - NH 2 and NH 37.

The tripartite meeting chose to create conductive environment for the democratic process of consultation and dialogue and next tripartite talks will be held within a month of time at political level, S Milan said.
