Ahmad topples Hayatou as CAF president

Amaju Pinnick

The Madagascar football chief, ended Issa Hayatou's 29-year reign on Thursday, picking up 34 votes against the Cameroonian's 20.

The new Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Ahmad Ahmad, has thanked delegates for their confidence and for giving him the mandate to rule African football.

"You know Hayatou was too old to play with the youngsters around him, whether it is Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino who is young, Phillip Chiyangwa is young, Ahmad is young, and he is an old man", Chiyangwa tells KickOff.com from Ethiopia. The vote also means Hayatou will be replaced as a FIFA Senior Vice President.

Jordaan had failed four years ago in his bid to get onto the cabinet of African football's governing body when he was upset by Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar.

Chiyangwa was Ahmad's campaign manager.

"The team worked very hard and understood the elections well enough as we didn't let people be confused as we gave them proper direction".

The 70-year-old from Cameroon left the congress room when Thursday's result was announced without commenting, led away by the arm by one of his aides.

Around the same time, TheCable gathered that senate president Bukola Saraki was unhappy with the pressure Dalung was putting on Pinnick, especially after Ahmad had sought support from him and the sports minister, during a visit to Nigeria.

We can now safely say Zimbabwe is now in good books with Caf and Federation Internationale de Football Association after these recent developments.

Hany Abou-Rida also talked about the win of the candidate Egypt's FA supported and was asked if Hayatou's confidence just before the results were announced anxious him.

The addition of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania which has its own Government, sees the CAF grow to an equal size to that of European counterparts UEFA, who also have 55 Member Associations. Both those times he won by a landslide and hadn't faced a challenger in more than a decade.

Eritrea was ineligible to cast its vote, as the tiny nation torn by civil wars has failed to enter her football teams in CAF competitions.
