'Angel of Death' serial killer dies after attack in prison

A former hospital orderly dubbed the "Angel of Death", who said he killed more than 50 people while insisting he only meant to end their suffering, died Thursday after an attack in an OH prison, PEOPLE confirms. An Ohio prison spokesperson said that Harvey was beaten in prison and is critically injured.

"Donald Harvey decided as the "Angel of Death" he had the right to decide who lives and who dies, and it was wrong, and he knew it, and he was a murderer", Nadel said.

Harvey pleaded guilty in 1987 to killing 37 people, mostly while he worked as a nurse's aide at hospitals in Cincinnati and London, Kentucky.

Harvey, serving multiple life sentences and eligible for parole in 2043, murdered his victims, beginning in 1987, using various methods, including arsenic and cyanide, according to court records.

The beating left him on life support, and medical personnel did not expect him to survive, WCPO-TV reported Wednesday citing local law enforcement sources.

Harvey became known as the "Angel of Death" after pleading guilty in 1987 to 37 murders. Harvey said he did so to stop patients' suffering.

After being convicted, he claimed his was behind another 18 patient deaths at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati. "They just pronounce him dead and send him straight to his funeral home".

He claimed he began acting out of compassion for terminally ill patients, WCPO reports. "I'm not a mean person, and I forgive and forget, but all the families of the people in the hospital, their friends, even the man he lived with, how can you do that to people?" Some of the patients were suffocated when he let their oxygen tanks run out.

His spree was uncovered during an autopsy on one of his Drake Hospital victims, after a doctor detected a whiff of cyanide and traced the death back to the hospital orderly.

Harvey is now serving 15 life sentences and will be first eligible for parole when he's 91 years old.
