'Beauty & the Beast' Breaks Record at Box Office

Here's how it looked when Watson threw a snowball at the Beast. Disney

Its cumulative total now stands at $42.6 million.

Disney's live-action Beauty was a beast at the box office, opening with an estimated $170 million in North American ticket sales and setting a new high mark for family movies.

Yes, Dan Stevens was actually on set during the big dance scene in "Beauty and the Beast" - on stilts, no less. The record had been held by last year's opening of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". BATB also had the No. 1 bow of 2017 in those markets as well as Italy, Sweden and Brazil, among others.

What makes it all the more surprising is that the studio is not lost for cash; Maleficent made $759 million worldwide, while Cinderella bought in $544 million and 2016's The Jungle Book made $967 million.

Rumours during filming of Beauty And The Beast abounded that Dan Stevens, who plays the Beast, was refused a rental vehicle upgrade in order to accommodate his two children; it was also claimed that Disney refused to pay for an upgraded flight for Lily James' mother during promotion for Cinderella.

Actor Emma Watson is expected to pull in Dollars 15 million ( Rs 100 crore approximately) for the live-action remake of the 1991 Disney classic.

The film's PG rating, mid-March release, casting, and mix of both new and classic songs helped lead to the film's big opening, Degarabedian said.

The 37-year-old actor says he had lost touch with how unbelievable the journey of the antagonist in the Bill Condon film was, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The company has already announced more remakes to come for classic animated films "Dumbo", "Mulan", and "The Lion King".
