Benjamin Netanyahu Says Israeli Strike in Syria Aimed At Hezbollah

-Israeli missile interceptor will be operational soon, completing Israel's multi-layer defense system, a senior Israeli air force official said Monday.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatened to destroy Syria's air defences "without compromise" if they were used again against Israeli planes.

Ambassador Gary Koren was called in by Russia's Foreign Ministry on Friday after news about the strike emerged, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told the media on Monday, confirming earlier media reports. It was the latest in a string of attacks, Israeli military experts noted, intended as a message of warning directed at both the Iranian-backed Syrian regime and its Russian allies.

The latest Israeli attack was reported by the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which said that the strike targeted a auto travelling on a road between Damascus and Quneitra, a town in the Golan Heights near the border with Israel.

Warplanes hit several targets in Syria on Friday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the strikes targeted weapons bound for Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah movement.

"David's Sling comes in precisely at the seam between the Arrow and Iron Dome and is created to intercept more advanced and complex missiles", said an officer from the battalion that operates the system.

Syria's air defence forces fired anti-aircraft missiles at the Israeli jets as they returned from the mission.

Israel and Syria are still technically at war, though the border had remained largely quiet for decades until 2011 when the Syrian conflict broke out.

"We are taking action to prevent the transfer of advanced weaponry to Hezbollah, and we will spare no effort to prevent that in the future".

The David's Sling gives the Israel Defense Forces "more capabilities and more effectiveness", he says, "but it's never enough". Hezbollah claims that the attacks by Israel were in defense of ISIS in the region. Israel estimates that Hezbollah has thousands of more reserve fighters than it did in 2006.

"That's something that Hezbollah would like to know too", he says with a laugh.
