Billionaire banker, philanthropist David Rockefeller dies at 101

David Rockefeller has died aged 101

David Rockefeller, banker, philanthropist and presidential adviser, died Monday at 101, a statement from a family spokesman said.

The world-known philanthropist and confidante of several United States presidents, David Rockefeller, was born in 1915 as the grandson of the oil baron John D. Rockefeller, the first billionaire in the U.S. history. From Washington to New York City government to capitals around the world, his influence was far flung and included banking, education and the art world. By then it had made John D Rockefeller the richest man in the world, and provided an extraordinarily gilded and well-connected inheritance for his descendants. David Rockefeller's nephew, JayRockefeller, was a longtime USA senator from West Virginia.

Rockefeller married Margaret McGrath from 1940 until her death in 1996 and the couple had six children.

In 1961, David Rockefeller became the president of Chase Manhattan Company, where he stayed until his retirement in 1981.

He was well-known to world leaders, including South African President Nelson Mandela, China's Deng Xiaoping, the shah of Iran and Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt.

He was the last surviving grandchild of John D. Rockefeller, who started the oil empire that today includes both Exxon Mobil and Chevron.

He was also remembered for his patronage to philanthropy and the arts, preserving his family's close relationship with the Museum of Modern Art. At one point, his private art collection was valued at $500 million, and his famously vast collection of contacts - which the Times says had roughly 150,000 names in it - needed a whole room to house it.

He also gave Harvard a $100 million donation in 2008. Forbes magazine ranked Rockefeller 581st on its annual list of billionaires released Monday with a fortune of $3.3 billion.
