Celebs, social media stars raise $1 million for Somalis facing starvation

Turkish Airlines steps in to help famine-hit Somalia

Turkish Airlines is the only airline that flies from the U.S.to Somalia.

In an Instagram post, Kaepernick, who recently became a free agent after his last season with the San Francisco 49ers, announced that Turkish Airlines has heard a call he and other celebrities lodged over social media for aid to the impoverished conutry, which is undergoing an extreme humanitarian crisis. Stiller and the rest of his teammates on this inspiring escapade - including social justice advocate Chakabars Clarke, YouTuber Casey Neistat, Vine star Jérôme Jarre, YouTube's Juanpa Zurita, football player Colin Kaepernick, and more - shared videos on social media asking Turkish Airlines to help with this shipment that could provide "immediate relief for immediate need".

A severe drought in Somalia has been causing deaths due to dehydration and cholera.

The idea for the campaign began when Jarre took to social media in a bid to convince Turkish Airlines to fill one of its flights to Somalia with food. "We can help be the change".

Turkish Airlines also started backing the campaign by retweeting the tweets related to the push, finally posting a video on Friday with the title, "Ready for take-off to help Somalia". Let's make this happen lets help save these lives.

A handful of the world's top influencers have teamed with the actor Ben Stiller and Turkish Airlines to fight a starvation that has swept Somalia in recent days, where roughly half of the country's population can not access food due to a severe drought. Where to get that food and water? On the GoFundMe page created by Jarre, which has already raised more than $1 million, he announced that the airline has also agreed to allow food containers to be shipped on its commercial aircrafts to Somalia until the end of the starvation. We will make sure every cent goes to helping these people.

Stiller said he thought the push for a plane to carry food and and water to Somalia could at least drive interest in the problems affecting East African countries.
