Chance the Rapper meets with IL governor about Chicago school system

In brief remarks to reporters as he walked to the elevators with a small entourage, the rapper said he was disappointed by "vague answers" from the governor about funding for CPS, but had exchanged phone numbers with Rauner.

Chance the Rapper is determined to improve schools in Chicago, and he won't be deterred by the "vague answers" that he received from the IL governor, Bruce Rauner.

Chance was clearly frustrated with the Governor, with reports suggesting the Republican gave "vague answers" when it came to fixing the state's broken education system. Chance, who attended schools in Chicago, then requested the conversation.

The Grammy victor met with Rauner Friday (March 3) to discuss a funding increase for the nation's third largest public school system.

Late previous year, Rauner vetoed a bill that would have given Chicago Public Schools a one-time $215 million payment to help cover employee pensions.

Chance officially ascended into the pop culture stratosphere with last year's release of his third album, "Coloring Book", which won three Grammys- and prompted Rauner to send out a congratulatory tweet.

"Chicago Public Schools and I did not lose today", Chance tweeted after the meeting.

The Grammy-winning rapper, whose full name is Chancelor Bennett, said he asked Rauner to "take our kids off the table" as he left his office. "I'm here because I just want people to do their jobs". According to the rapper, himself, the meeting did not go as well as expected. "We may not agree on everything, that's OK".

Chance said he and Rauner talked about $215 million missing from CPS's budget after the governor in December vetoed the funding. He told reporters he would be monitoring developments and later wrote on Twitter, "The fight has just begun".

Chicago Public Schools upped the stakes of the lawsuit Monday when it warned that the school year could end June 1 - almost three weeks early - and summer school programs could be cut without a preliminary ruling in the school board's favor from Judge Franklin Ulyses Valderrama. 'Please don't let that become the narrative. "Monday morning I'll have a plan". His insights come in part from coming from an activist family: his father, Ken Bennett, was an aide to Harold Washington in the 1980s, and a former deputy chief of staff to Rahm Emanuel.

The governor said he looked forward to future discussions with the rapper.
