Comcast to Expand Streaming Service

Comcast to Launch Wireless Service This Year

The company has launched a new service dubbed Xfinity Instant TV, which is a sign of making good on its promise of rebranding and expanding. Rumor has it that Comcast will launch app-based Xfinity Instant TV in the next few months.

Xfinity Instant TV, as the service is known, will be priced somewhere between $15 and $40 per month, and will include major broadcast networks and offer add on options for sports and other channels.

Following in the footsteps of DirecTV, Comcast is planning to introduce a skinny bundle of its own, according to a report from Reuters.

The re-launch of Comcast's new service will change the name from Stream to Xfinity Instant TV service.

The original Stream TV service being trialed costs about $15 per month and is available only on mobile devices.

Xfinity Instant TV will be available only to Comcast's broadband subscribers in metro areas including Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area. But once it acquires national rights, it will be able to make its service available in NY and Los Angeles as well, notes The Street.

Xfinity Instant TV will be released with the expectation that subscribers will move toward, and upgrade to Comcast's X1 platform over a time period. Some reports have argued that this requirement is grounds for violating basic net neutrality principles, as the service would be getting preferred treatment compared to other Internet traffic. Sources close to the company have revealed that the service is likely to hit the market in the third quarter with more than 50 million homes within Comcast's trace being the first beneficiaries. The TV streaming service was enabled to provide content onto PCs, tablets and phones and they have to pass via a broadband modem. However, the company remains focused on bringing in new cable-TV subscribers from the traditional cable TV service markets. There are not too many details about the packages yet, however, the service is expected to be a no-contract offering without "truck rolls" (equipment for a service delivered by a network operator).
