Daesh commander of Mosul's Old City killed

Iraqi forces are battling ISIL inside Mosul's western disctricts for full control of the major city

Al-Jaff noted that more than 140 tons of food aid had recently been delivered to civilian residents of western Mosul, while additional amounts had been delivered to the eastern side of the city.

Iraqi government forces say they have killed the Isis commander of Mosul's Old City as they attempt to regain a key bridge crossing the Tigris River.

The Iron Bridge is one of three of five bridges still held by Isis in Mosul after others were destroyed by air strikes or by the militants themselves.

As many as 600,000 civilians are thought to still be in the Old City along with the militants. With many Daesh leaders having already retreated from Mosul, Al-Ansary's death comes as blow to the militants as they defend their shrinking area of control street-by-street and house-by-house.

"We are often literally in the same house, on the roof, and Daesh (Islamic State) is downstairs. We are taking out snipers hiding in the surrounding building, we are still pushing for the Iron Bridge", Brig.

Near the Mosul Museum, Iraq forces used armored vehicles and tanks to attack snipers pinning down troops clearing areas around the bridge.

In mid-2014, when ISIS seized large swathes of Iraq and Syria, the jihadist group took Mosul, once considered the terrorist group's de facto capital in Iraq, much like what Raqqa is to the jihadist group in Syria.astern Mosul fell to the anti-ISIS U.S. -backed offensive of almost 100,000 Iraqi government troops, Kurdish Peshmerga forces, and Iran-backed Shiite militias, among other fighters.

Deepening the disenchantment of Iraq's Sunnis would only further alienate them and risk worsening the country's security problems and even bring the emergence of even more hardline Sunni groups once the militants are defeated, he said.

United States envoy Brett McGurk said on Sunday that the remaining western Mosul neighbourhoods held by ISIL were surrounded and the group had lost more than 60 percent of the territory it once held in Iraq. The decisive stage in the battle for Mosul started on October 17 a year ago.

These are the conditions Islamic State fighters holed up in the city centre relish. The Iraqi forces include army, special forces, Kurdish peshmerga and Shi'ite militias.

"The fight is in the old city now, but it's tough, the streets are narrow", said Nasser Taleb, 34, a bandage over his eye from a bullet ricochet wound he said he suffered on Aleppo Street on the edge of the old city, where intense fighting took place at the weekend. It would break the militant group's hold on territory in Iraq and end its control over half the "caliphate", which once spanned from northern Syria through western Iraq.
