Danny Jacobs brought it, but Gennady Golovkin too much in the end

Last Saturday night, undefeated undisputed middleweight Champion of the World Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, who holds a pristine unblemished record of 37 wins and 33 of those by the way of knockout, won a clear unanimous decision against solid contender Danny Jacobs by the scores of 114-113 and 115-112 twice at Madison Square Garden in NY.

Gennady "GGG" Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs entered the ring at Madison Square Garden with a combined record of 68-1 with 62 knockouts.

Gennady Golovkin unified the middleweight titles, but the victory over Danny Jacobs was in doubt until his hand was raised at the end. It was the first time in his career that one of his fights went at least 12 rounds. "Danny Jacobs is my favorite fighter".

The judges dissented. Golovkin kept his multiple titles, prevailing on scores of 114-113 and 115-112 twice.

Gonzalez, who won his previous 46 fights, was put down in the first round but battled back to make it a thrilling fight.

The tide swept back and forth, and even with the Garden crowd urging Golovkin with chants of "Triple-G", it was Jacobs who rose to the occasion near the end of the 11th round to land a big left hook followed by a left-right combo before the bell that has him exulting.

"This is my first fight of the year", said Golovkin. "Of course, I want that fight", he said. But Jacobs, from Brooklyn and, oddly, a representative of the competing arena the Barclays Center, tested him more than anyone has. Golovkin, a native of Kazakhstan, has knocked out 23 opponents in a row.

"I think I won by two rounds minimum", Jacobs said. Jacobs wasn't that, and he proved it by giving Golovkin his toughest fight.

A rematch was mentioned in his post-fight interview with HBO's Max Kellerman, although there's also the small matter of a super-fight with Canelo Alvarez to consider should the Mexican come through compatriot Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.in Las Vegas on May 6. Jacobs probably could have jabbed more to increase his control to the ring, while Golovkin could have aimed to the body a bit more to prevent Jacobs from winning.

That meant Golovkin probably wouldn't weigh much more than 170 pounds for the fight. "I am like an animal for that fight".

Jacobs did not go quietly during the middle rounds. Leading into Saturday night, this was the biggest question. We give Kell Brook a ton of credit because when three of the top middleweights in the world turned down the opportunity to fight Gennady, he stepped up and he took the same exact deal that was on the table for Eubank. Jacobs didn't even show up.
