"Different Approach Required": Secretary Tillerson On North Korea

State Rex Tillerson center meets with U.S. and South Korea soldiers before the lunch meeting at the Camp Bonifas near the border village of Panmunjom which has separated the two Koreas since the Korean War in Paju South Kore

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said on Thursday he agreed with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that North Korea's nuclear and missile programs were not permissible.

"In the face of this ever-escalating threat, it is clear that a different approach is required".

More than twenty years after the U.S. agreed to fund a supposedly peaceful nuclear-energy program in North Korea in exchange for promises not to develop nuclear weapons, Rex Tillerson declared diplomacy dead in dealing with the Stalinist regime in Pyongyang.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the level of State Department spending in the past was "simply not sustainable".

During the meeting with the President, during my visit to the United States with Donald Trump, with President Trump, indeed, North Korea fired a missile during that time, and indeed, President Trump stood beside me and said, as a strong message, that he stands with Japan 100 percent.

The cuts, he said, reflect that the United States expects it won't be involved in military conflicts and hopes that other countries will pony up the cash for aid around the globe.

Now Tillerson has angered U.S. and foreign correspondents accredited to cover the State Department by traveling to Asia on Tuesday with just one journalist - from a conservative publication called the Independent Journal Review.

Tillerson said he would conduct a "comprehensive examination" of how the State Department's programs are run and how the department is structured. Israel gets more US aid than any other nation.

Japan and South Korea both host tens of thousands of USA troops. She wrote a story two weeks ago about Tillerson's strategy to "keep his head down while he sets out to make the State Department more efficient".

Thomas Karako, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that after so many years of failed diplomacy, it's inevitable the USA would consider more aggressive steps like military action.

The State Department had previously told reporters covering Tillerson's trip to South Korea, Japan, and China that he would not be taking reporters on his plane and that they would have to fly commercially, breaking with decades of precedent stretching back to Henry Kissinger. -Japanese resolve, Tillerson met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Toner tried to reassure inquiring reporters the media will "have broad access" to Tillerson.

It is important for the U.S., Japan and South Korea to "maintain a strong alliance in which there is no space between us" in dealing with the military threat from North Korea, he said.

The Yun-Tillerson meeting, their second face-to-face talks since the secretary took office, is expected to focus on the North's nuclear and missile threats, along with the diplomatic spat over THAAD.

Experts say it could have a nuclear-tipped missile that could reach the United States within a few years.
