Dr. Seuss' biting political cartoons against America First, racism, fascism

After World War II, he moved to La Jolla and penned classics like "Green Eggs and Ham" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", which became staples for young readers.

In recognition of Dr. Seuss' birthday, students at Forest Hills Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day with displays and activities created to promote and foster a love of reading.

"Everyone was invited to dress up like Seuss characters or in silly clothes on Thursday", she said.

Schools across the Central Coast such as the ones in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District will celebrate reading and literacy with special activities honoring Dr. Seuss.

"Orange again! How many oranges do you have?"

Stark students Ny'Asia Akins, a first-grader, and Saniyah Smith, a fourth-grader, both correctly guessed that there were 99 fish in a "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" fishbowl, winning a bag of prizes each.

"We do this every year", said Sara Fisher, youth services director at the Degenstein.

"Reading aloud to a child is the single most important thing a caregiver can do to prepare a child for reading and learning", said GGB Principal Erin Waugaman, who noted that numerous pre-K and kindergarten students at her school cannot yet read.

Students also wore their own head gear for Lewis and Clark's hat day to inject some communal school spirit before they let out for spring break, according to the children.

Thursday was "The Cat-In-The-Hat" day.

Student council member Isabella Lovato said it's important for kids to find a book with a story they can relate to.

"So I think that's great".

"I remember when I was little, I thought high school kids were so cool", he said.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know".

He said, "WEAC is proud of communities like Holmen that put public education first".

Kahn, also a safety on the McDaniel football team, was one of many who came to try to bring a love of reading to the kids. Dr. Seuss was not a doctor.

Later, the children celebrated with birthday cake.

Mary Matthews, a first grade teacher at Clarksville Elementary, coordinated a similar series of activities for her students.

"It exposes the kids to reading and that's our ultimate goal, especially at this level, because we want every kid to leave here reading at grade level".

Success By 6 with The United Way will do their part, to help all students get an academic start!
